Why G90 Steel Beats Other Metals for Raised Garden Beds

When you’re building raised beds that will be in direct contact with soil, especially in gardens with regular watering, fertilizers, and seasonal temperature swings, your material choice matters. While both G90 galvanized steel and other metals are popular, only one is built to stand up to the realities of in-ground gardening.

G90 Galvanized Steel (1mm) 

G90 hot-dip galvanized steel is coated with 100% zinc, which corrodes sacrificially—meaning the zinc degrades before the steel underneath does. This makes it ideal for use in moist, acidic, or nutrient-rich soil, where corrosion is accelerated. It’s also thicker and stronger, making it structurally more robust and slower to fail once corrosion begins.

Other Metals, while excellent above ground for cladding aren't as robust for most soil contact applications. Many other metals are coated with a mix of aluminum, zinc, and silicon. Their corrosion protection relies on acting as a barrier, not on sacrificial corrosion, which means once compromised by cutting, scratching, etc, the steel beneath is more vulnerable, especially in wet or acidic soil. Plus, its thinner base metal means faster structural failure after corrosion starts.
